Professor Banning began working as a Senior Registrar at the John Radcliffe University Hospital in 1995.

He was appointed Consultant Cardiologist in 1999. He then became the Clinical Lead for cardiac medicine and in 2010 was appointed Divisional Director.

Professor Banning, is now the Senior Interventional Cardiologist in Oxford, UK. Working as a Consultant in interventional and general cardiology and is one of the founding members of the Oxford Private Heart and Lung Centre at Oxford at The Manor Hospital.

Pioneering minimally invasive techniques

Professor Banning’s responsibilities as Consultant Cardiologist, both as an NHS consultant and in his private practice, cover a wide range of coronary conditions and procedures. He has championed the use of coronary stents as an alternative to coronary bypass and has been a leading investigator in most of the practice changing trials- Syntax, Excel, Syntax 2 , Noble.

His work on transcutaneous aortic valve implants (TAVI) using the Lotus valve has enabled many people to receive life changing heart valve replacements who could not otherwise undergo traditional open heart surgery due to frailness or ill-health.

Promoting heart health and an international reputation for cardiology

He has also provided expert advice to a much wider audience in his position as Boots the Chemist’s Health Club cardiology expert.

Professor Banning’s calm approach to cardiology, rapport with patients and growing international reputation secured his spot in the top 10.

In 2010, Professor Banning was featured in the Daily Mail’s top 10 list of cardiologists. To compile the results, they asked 40 of the UK’s cardiologists to recommend five people they would trust to treat their family or close friends.

Teaching

Training, teaching and graduate supervision are core parts of Professor Banning’s work, helping to educate others in his pioneering work and to promote best practice cardiology techniques worldwide. In Oxford, Professor Banning and his colleagues have held many ‘Oxford Live’ coronary courses. Over 250 delegates attend the course, making it the largest independent live course in the UK.

In 2010 Oxford was selected by the Cardiovascular Research Foundation, New York, as one of 18 worldwide live case sites. Professor Banning was Site Principle and Oxford transmitted four live cases. In 2014 he hosted live case presentations from Oxford for the PCR course in Paris. Live stent procedures performed by Professor Banning were transmitted from Oxford to audiences of over 5000 cardiologists.

Farther afield, Professor Banning regularly attends intervention training courses as live case operator and lecturer, including regular appearances at the ‘Meet the Masters’ series in Paris – a Europe-wide training programme in PCI – and American Transcatheter Therapeutics (TCT) meetings.
